The Mater Dei Super Mileage Team is a group of students that designs
and builds a car to get the highest possible miles per gallon. The team competes
in multiple contests in the state and national divisions. This is an
extra-curricular activity in which all work on the cars' concept, design, and
construction are done outside of school.
This project gives students a chance for hands on learning
in both engineering and shop technique that the normal high school experience
does not allow.
The team has been blessed with great guidance in Mr.
Robert Neisen, Mr. Bob Schleter, and unsurpassed sponsors. Without
great leadership and generous donations, the project never would have been
possible.
None of the work could have been completed on these cars
without the generous support from wonderful local sponsors. These sponsors have
given us the materials and knowledge necessary to compete and win!

The team runs two cars, one for each class. The first is
the stock class which is a car made with a completely unmodified, or stock,
motor. This is to say that it is a straight from the factory Briggs and Stratton
3.5 bhp motor, pull start and all. This is the larger of the two cars so that
the driver will have room to pull start the motor, while moving inside the
vehicle. This class is run at the state level only.
The second is the Unlimited Class. In this class the motor
may be modified in any way the team desires as long as it is considered
"recognizable as the original Briggs block and crank case". MDSMT has
added an electric starter to the motor, as well as many other piston, and
cylinder modifications. We have also modified the motor so that it is now a
double overhead cam (DOC).
